'Imâd al-Dîn Ismâ'îl Ibn 'Umar Ibn Kathîr is a great compiler of hadiths (hâfiz), famous exegete of the Quran, historian and eminent Shafi'i jurist. Born in 701 H./1301 AD and died in 774 H./1373, he lived in Basra and then in Damascus and is a disciple of Ibn Taymiyya and al-Dhahabî. His most famous work is his Tafsîr of the Quran, considered one of the best and most reliable exegeses of the Quran.
